The emergence of significant family contexts which extend over the household and the nuclear family has been underlined during the two last decades (see, for instance, Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1994). However, evaluative most tools available to family therapists focus on the nuclear family, i.e., parents and their children. This focus is detrimental since it makes some family relationships invisible and therefore some relational diagnosis are incomplete. This article presents a new method of delineation of significant family contexts and visualization of family relationships, the Family Network Method (FNM).
